Cataloochee Ranch

They say these mountains are 250 million years old. They’ll get no argument from us. Only time could have rounded their contours, carpeted their slopes with ancient hardwoods and their hidden trails with snowy trillium blossoms, and sent their blue peaks rolling away into the distance like a vast, eternal sea. In fact, one translation of the Cherokee word “Cataloochee” is “wave upon wave.” And that’s a translation that gets no argument from us, either.

For more than 75 years, the Great Smoky Mountains have been our home. And people like you have been our guests, often returning again and again to establish their own family vacation traditions and help us preserve the heritage of this very special corner of western North Carolina.

If you’re one of those old friends, we look forward to welcoming you back to Maggie Valley this year. If not, your welcome is waiting. You may be a first-time guest, but we promise, you’ll never be a stranger. We invite you to come and discover for yourself what makes a vacation with us an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

Even if, like the mountains, you live for a long, long time.

Lazy 5 Ranch

The Lazy 5 Ranch is privately owned and operated by Henry Hampton with no federal or state funding. Henry Hampton has been raising exotic animals for over 35 years and is known nationwide for his handling of exotic animals. Henry Hampton is the owner of Lazy 5 Ranch with a baby giraffe. For many years Mr. Hampton allowed school groups to visit his home to gaze from the opposite side of the fence and through cracks of barn doors at the animals. Others made loops through the driveway trying to get a glimpse of Mr. Hampton’s many unique species. Seeing the educational and entertaining possibilities, Mr. Hampton began putting together his plan for a park that would allow children and adults alike to fully experience his exotic animal collection.

On May 22, 1993 after several years of planning and hard work, his dream became a reality. With a mere staff of five, two buildings and only two operating wagons, the Lazy 5 Ranch was officially open. The name of the park was debated for only a short amount of time when Mr. Hampton’s son came up with the obvious name, Lazy 5 Ranch. Mr. Hampton’s family at the time consisted of 5 “lazy” people. The Lazy 5 Ranch is now the home to over 750 animals from 6 different continents. These animals can be viewed by horse drawn wagon ride tour or from the comfort of your own vehicle while traveling along a 3-1/2 mile safari ride.

The Lazy 5 Ranch strives to have a constantly changing environment by adding new exhibits as well as increasing the variety of animals seen in the drive through safari areas. The purpose of the Lazy 5 Ranch is to educate in an entertaining way, as well as provide an excellent environment for the reproduction of some of God’s most unique creatures. The Lazy 5 Ranch also seeks to help the recovery of several endangered species including the Grevy Zebra, Scimitar Horned Oryx and Ring-tailed Lemur. Hopefully, with your visit to the Lazy 5 Ranch, you have learned new things and had lots of fun. Come see us again soon. The animals will be waiting!

Riley’s Ranch

Riley’s Ranch is a 75 acre family farm located in Moore County, North Carolina.

Our current stock consists of registered Shorthorn and Black Angus cattle and free range heritage chickens.

Nestled in the beautiful Sandhills of North Carolina, our animals are treated with the utmost respect and receive the best of care.

AWA is the most highly regarded food label when it comes to animal welfare, pasture-based farming, and sustainability.

That is what Riley’s Ranch is all about.

We have sold our herd of Large Black and Tamworth hogs (which we loved) but may get back into that aspect of farming in the future. For now we will focus on cattle and chickens while we oversee our new company, Riley Power Group.

We are dedicated to the use of sustainable farming practices which include rotational grazing on our fresh pastures and woodlands with access to natural spring water, the use of compost on our gardens and pastures instead of dangerous chemical fertilizers. We strive to minimalize any land or water contamination on our farm by avoiding the use of pesticides and by using strategic fencing around our ponds. We have selected animals that are good foragers and are planting crops that are indigenous to our area or do well in our climate, with no antibiotics, hormones, or chemicals added to our animal’s diets.

All farm animals have a personality and lifestyle unique to their breed that are not allowed to be expressed in over-crowded commercial livestock operations. Simply put, animals are not allowed to be themselves in those operations, and are forced to live in unnatural conditions requiring genetic engineering and the daily use of antibiotics and hormones to produce an animal that can survive.
