Bit of Hope Ranch

The mission of Bit of Hope Ranch is to Reach, Rescue and Restore hurting children, families and horses through offering complete equine therapy wellness and educational programs.

This non-profit, 501(c)3 organization was founded in 2008 out of Meg Vanderbilt’s passion to help hurting children by allowing them to find hope and healing through a relationship with a horse. All of the horses and animals have a story when they arrive at the Ranch. Children can often identify with these physical or emotional scars that the horses present. Clients work together with the therapy team which includes a licensed professional, an equine specialist and of course…a horse! Clients find this type of therapy powerful and effective. Beginning August 2016, the Ranch will offer Therapeutic Riding services for special needs clients. This will allow the Ranch to become a complete equine therapy wellness center!

cha_logo.ai_Bit of Hope is also CHA, Certified Horseman’s Association, Site Accredited to ensure the safety of horse and human. The Ranch is located on 45 acres of hardwood and pasture land. The facilities include 2 barns, 2 covered riding arenas and a large grass arena. The Nature Quest Discovery Trails includes 3 miles of wooded trails, a low ropes trail and a large pond with gazebo. A Tribal Trail (Sensory Trail) offers clients challenges and learning stations while on horseback and foot. The crow of a chicken or a nicker from a horse can be heard daily. The Ranch is now home to more than dozen horses and other small farm animals. hannah kid

Bit of Hope is driven by volunteer power and funded by donation dollars. Every week, 50 volunteer hours keep the animals fed and the Ranch running smoothly. Dozens more volunteer hours are required each week for groups and educational programs. It takes a lot of hands to offer these amazing programs. Take a look to see how you can become involved with volunteering or donating to support the mission.

Blue Q Ranch

Blue Q Ranch is nestled on 1580 acres in the scenic, rolling hills of the Uwharrie Mountains outside Troy, NC. The natural beauty and abundant wildlife form a backdrop for a modern cattle operation focused on the needs of commercial cattlemen and registered breeders alike. The farm is the dream of Tennessee Titans quarterback Kerry Collins, a Pennsylvania native who fell in love with the region during a stint with the Carolina Panthers. The ranch provides the perfect off-season retreat for Kerry, his wife Brooke, herself a North Carolina native and daughter Riley.

The vision began in 2002 with the purchase of the former J-Bob Farm and 22 head of red Angus. Registered black Angus and Balancers soon joined this group. By 2006, the decision was made to focus on the production of Angus seedstock and premium black Angus became the objective of the operation. For the next several years, Blue Q Ranch built a strong genetic base influenced by the top Angus herds in the nation, with emphasis on performance and carcass quality. The farm itself grew to accommodate its goal to encompass 780 acres in pasture balanced with 800 acres in managed timber. With its foundation established, Blue Q ranch became a regular consigner to major seedstock sales across the nation and continued acquiring select donors to enhance the breeding program. Today, the seedstock division includes approximately 300 brood cows and more than a dozen high quality donors.

A farm is a work in progress, and Blue Q Ranch is now diversified with Simm/Angus hybrids and commercial cattle in addition to Angus seedstock to support a wider range of customer demand. The ranch hosted its first production sale in 2009 and is moving forward with the aim of providing high quality, affordable, functional cattle for both registered and commercial cattlemen. Currently, one yearly production sale is held in March, but private sales of Blue Q Ranch bulls, heifers, and commercial cattle are always welcome.

Rocky Creek Ranch

Rocky Creek Ranch, composed of approximately 250 acres of grasslands and 250+ acres of natural trees, is located in Statesville, NC towards the northern part of Iredell County. Most of our neighbors are large third or fourth generation family farmers. Rocky Creek Ranch has a long and interesting history.

Around 1850, Baker E. Holland, a wagon maker and farmer, built a house that became known as the Baker Summers House. The Greek revival structure was constructed on the Old Stagecoach Road (later called The Georgia Road) which ran from Elkin, NC to Atlanta, GA. The stagecoach passed through the property and directly in front of the house.

According to one tradition, slaves constructed the house from bricks made of clay found in a nearby field. We have reclaimed 3 pallets of the red bricks and plan to recycle them at each sensory station, and for other projects around the farm. Baker Holland also constructed a two story mill on Little Rocky Creek. We have four of the five millstones displayed on the property. The chimney and foundation of the mill are still visible on the creek. Sadly, the house, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was removed in 2001 during construction of the current barns and riding arena. The foundation of the home is now the site for our Amphitheater at Station A.

Baker E. Holland (1806-1866) was the son of a Maryland wagon maker, Basil Holland, who had come to Iredell County sometime in the first half of the nineteenth century. Baker followed his father’s trade, at least for a time. The 1850 population census lists him as a wagon maker but he does not appear on the industrial census. By 1860 he was devoting most of his efforts to farming, and he is listed as a farmer in the census of that year. His real estate at that time consisted of 75 acres of improved land and 300 acres of unimproved land with a total value of $3,000. Along with his chief crops of wheat and corn, he raised a number of livestock including 25 swine. He also owned one female slave.

Baker died in 1866 and the house and farm passed to D.H. Perry, an in-law. It subsequently went to S.A. Fowler and then to John I. Douglas in 1899. The Douglas family sold the land to Thomas P. Summers in 1903. Summers was an Iredell County farmer who had served in the Confederate Army. He left the house to his granddaughter Elsie P. Hall who sold the property to the Mattei family in 1999. The Mattei family spent over a decade constructing a beautiful family retreat on the property. They acquired additional land parcels, built roads and infrastructure, a small lake, planted many trees and completed eight miles of trails. We acquired the property in October 2012. Elsie Hall’s son Sam Hall and his wife Janet still live opposite us and are a great source for local history and stories.

We feel fortunate to have access to a property that is rich in historical value and natural wonder. Aside from the large variety of plants and animals that call the property home, the peacefulness of the space provides all who visit a chance to truly benefit from our natural environment.
